The Four C’s of Diamonds

Diamond quality is graded based on four factors, known as the four C’s: carat, cut, color, and clarity. Each attribute is important to consider when selecting a diamond. At Occasions, we’re passionate about diamonds, and love sharing our enthusiasm and expertise with you! Read on to learn more about how diamonds are evaluated and graded or visit our store today for help selecting the perfect diamond. Note that Occasions bases its grading on the GIA grading criteria.

Carat

Carat is a unit of measurement referring to a diamond’s weight. Carat weight can be a good indicator of a diamond’s general size, and usually the greater the carat weight, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. The word “carat” is derived from the “carob” seed, which has a very consistent size and weight, and was historically used as a comparison tool to measure gemstones.

Cut

Cut refers to the proportions and symmetry of a diamond. An ideal cut allows the maximum amount of light to pass through the diamond to create optimal shine. When each raw diamond is mined, it’s carefully evaluated to determine the best, most brilliant cut for that particular stone. At Occasions, our diamond experts can help you choose the best cut for your unique needs.

Color

The color of a diamond is one of its more noticeable attributes and one that impacts price. Diamonds range from colorless (D,E,F on the GIA color scale) highest in rarity with no secondary color within the crystal, to near-colorless (G,H,I,J on the GIA color scale) showing a slight secondary color usually yellow or brown, to varying degrees of coloration having increasingly noticeable yellow or brown coloring. They can also come in fancy colors including yellow, blue, and even red. Our team can guide you through the spectrum of diamond colors and what the color scale means in terms of a diamond’s value.

Clarity

Natural diamonds are created from carbon subjected to intense heat and pressure under the earth’s surface. During this process, internal marks, referred to as “inclusions,” can be created in the diamond along with external marks, called “blemishes.” Each diamond is evaluated for clarity based on the presence (or absence) of these marks under a powerful magnifying lens by diamond graders, and subsequently rated on a scale from included to flawless.
